Historical Flutes

Baroque Classical Romantic

Dorothea Seel is a flutist, artistic director, and sonic trailblazer whose work redefines how historical music is heard today. Performing on original flutes from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, she reveals an astonishing spectrum of colour, expression, and stylistic nuance often lost in modern performance. Her artistic signature lies in creating bold, story-driven programmes that bring forgotten composers and rarely performed works back to life — opening a window into how their time truly sounded.

She performs internationally with leading period-instrument ensembles and as a soloist in distinctive recital, chamber music, and orchestral formats. As Artistic Director of the Barocksolisten München, she shapes innovative projects that combine vivid musicianship with dramaturgical depth, resulting in acclaimed recordings and performances.

Mozart+ Series

In her role as Vice President of the Deutsche Mozart-Gesellschaft, Seel curates exceptional programming for the series “Mozart+”, shedding new light on the musical world surrounding Mozart. Her concepts illuminate the era’s remarkable diversity through rediscovered repertoire that once captivated audiences but has since faded from view. By placing these forgotten gems alongside familiar masterpieces, she reveals a richer, more multi-layered portrait of the period — far beyond the canonical lens of Mozart and Beethoven — allowing listeners to experience this epoch in a strikingly fresh and unexpected way.

Her commitment to rediscovery also extends to artistic research and education. Seel’s award-winning publication The Sound of the Flute in the 19th Century (Award of Excellence, Republic of Austria) has significantly influenced modern perspectives on historical flute aesthetics and performance practice. She is also in demand as a lecturer and masterclass teacher, sharing her expertise on 18th- and 19th-century flutes with students and professionals around the world.
